Food adventure in Siargao

Travel dates: 07-10 September 2018

We’re going to recap here the places we visited in Siargao that filled our tummies.

For this trip, we hadn’t done much research on where and what to eat in Siargao. We were too busy with work a few weeks prior to the trip, and so, we just relied on our hunger instincts and recommendations from the locals there.

Upon check-in, we asked the lady assisting us for restaurants that we must try in Siargao. Here are her suggestions:

Shaka
Harana Surf
Las Cabanas
Kermit

So we kept those in mind as we go along our travel. Here is the chronology of our food adventure:

1. Olas Banditos Seawadeeka – It was already past 3:00PM when we arrived in our accommodation. We hadn’t eaten lunch yet so right after checking in, we went to the nearest food place in sight. My partner E and I initially ordered their bestselling Shrimp Pad Thai, assuming that the serving would be enough for two persons given its P350  price. But apparently, the serving was only good for one. And so we ordered another one, which was the Chicken Pad Thai. For us, it’s quite expensive, or even more expensive than the Thai resto in Metro Manila. Yeah we know,  we were in an island, so what do we expect? Well we thought that maybe the food in Siargao would be a little bit cheaper? After all we were still in a province right? But to be fair, their Pad Thai was tasty and can fill a hungry tummy.  Food: 3.5/5 | Value: 3/5

2. Kermit – After our pad thai lunch/merienda, we remembered that we had to go to Kermit to book our island hopping activity for the following day. The place was really cozy and inviting. And since we didn’t have anything to do for the night but to chill, we gave in to its invitation and ordered some booze and one of their best selling pizzas – which we forgot the name (sorry!) But here’s what it looks like.

Taste was okay, but nothing spectacular. We liked the chicken nuggets which resemble more like chicken balls to be honest. The chocolate lava ordered by my friend was good too. And most importantly, beer was affordable and the ambiance was great! Perfect way to cap off our first night.

We also had breakfast there on our last day, but it fell short of our expectations.  Food: 3.5/5 | Value: 4/5

3. Shaka – We didn’t know that this place is such a popular food place in Siargao. We planned to have breakfast here before our island hopping because it was the second nearest restaurant to our accommodation (1-min walk). Perhaps, you’re seeing the pattern of our food choices by now. It is by proximity! It opens at 7:00AM. We were already there before it opened and found some people queuing outside. The place is small and can only accommodate inside not more than 12 customers simultaneously. So if you’re planning to eat here, better be early and allot ample of time for queuing. We were lucky, we got in here early because as mentioned it was so close to where we stayed. We loved their Bom Dia! (P250). It was so filling, healthy food na sobrang nakakabusog. Perfect meal before you start surfing early in the morning.

Tip, if you order one of their healthy bowls, an additional coffee would only cost P50. But if you order a cup of coffee separately, the price is double. So you’re welcome! Food: 4.5/5 | Value: 4/5

4. Mama’s Grill E saw this place upon our arrival in the island and immediately searched for it online. He showed me Instagram food posts of people who dined there. Let’s just say we simply cannot resist grilled food. Period. Hehe. Without much contemplation, the group decided to go here after our island hopping and have early dinner. Again, as this place is notorious for long lines, we advise you to go here even before it starts grilling at 6:00PM. We placed our order at around 5:30PM, we were the 2nd group of customers in the queue.

And oh, don’t mind taking a bath before going here, because you will surely smell like smoke (or inihaw na ulam LOL). You can’t escape it no matter where you’re seated. The smell of smoke will linger on your clothes, your hair, your armpit, your entire being, sobrang kapit na kapit ang amoy! But nonetheless, another super sulit meal we had in Siargao! Food: 4/5 | Value: 5/5

5. Harana SurfOn our third day in Siargao, after we got back from Sugba lagoon trip which only took a half day, we decided to spend the rest of the afternoon in a place where we can watch the waves until sunset. Harana Surf has a beach front with a very laid back atmosphere. It has bean bags and sleeping mats where you can lie down and relax. The customers were mostly foreign tourists when we were there. The cuisine is Filipino-Asian fusion. We ordered pita with hummus as appetizer, pork sisig, and lechon kawali as our main dish. The serving was big enough and the price was fairly reasonable. Sorry we forgot to take pictures.  Food: 3.75/5 | Value: 4/5

6. Lunch at Daku island

But in all honesty, the food that we ENJOYED the most was the food served during our island hopping! We think we don’t need to elaborate further, just look at these pictures:

That’s all for last year’s Siargao food adventure. Hoping to be back soon for more!

Cheers,

E&E
